From data to decisions: How to avoid death by PowerPoint and accelerate clinical adoption of your study outcomes.
Together with Mike Leung, I’m excited to share our latest piece on the AO CMF blog — “From data to decisions: How to avoid death by PowerPoint and accelerate clinical adoption of your study outcomes.” In it, we unpack practical strategies to help surgeons and researchers deliver clear, structured, and engaging research presentations.
Key take-aways:
• Know your audience — tailor your level of detail and language to who’s listening.
• Start with a strong narrative: open with a case or clinical question, present data or imaging, then conclude with take-home points.
• Use simple visuals, concise slides (one core idea per slide), and the “assertion–evidence” slide style.
• Practice, rehearse, and prepare for Q&A — don’t read from slides, let them support your talk.
• Test your technical setup ahead of time and have backups (USB, cloud, etc.) to avoid tech failures.
As CMF-surgeons, communicating our research effectively isn’t just about academic success — it’s about ensuring new insights and techniques translate into better patient care worldwide. That’s why we believe mastering presentation skills remains a key part of advancing our field.
